Immunity Boosting Hot Cocoa

January 4, 2018

There is always something healing about warm liquid when you aren't feeling well. In Chinese Medicine when you are trying to nurture a cold sick body, warm foods and liquids are prescribed to help restore balance. Instead of just throwing a sugar bomb of cheap hot cocoa packets from the supermarket that leads to more inflammation and less healing, making our Mak and Mommy's favorite Immunity Boosting Hot Cocoa is a healthier option!

IMMUNITY BOOSTING HOT COCOA:

  • 1 cup unsweet vanilla almond milk or coconut milk

  • 1 capsule bovine colostrum with contents emptied into cup - this is where HUGE immunity benefits come from! (Click here to learn more about the powerful benefits of colostrum. Here is the brand we use at home)

  • 2 tsp unsweet cocoa powder

  • 1-2 tsp real maple syrup

  • 1-2 tsp MCT oil powder (don't give kids the MCT oil as it can upset their delicate bellies. Try the MCT oil powder. It provides a fuel source for the body and is gentle on their stomachs. We use this one since it is non-gmo and has prebiotic fiber for improving gut health)

  • 1/2 Tbsp unsalted grass-fed butter (I love Kerry Gold brand found easily at Target, Same Club, Walmart, Public etc)

  • small pinch of sea salt (for the electrolytes and mineral value)

Warm nut milk for 70 seconds in the microwave or on medium heat over the stove until it just starts to get hot. remove from heat and pour into a glass blender. Add in all other ingredients and blend on medium until frothy. Try adding the delicious coconut whipped cream (recipe below) for a fun and nutritionally packed topper!

Whipped Coconut Topping:

  • Place one can of full fat organic coconut milk in there fridge overnight (or at least until milk turns to a solid and the liquid separates from the cream)

  • 1/2 tsp Madagascar vanilla powder (or organic vanilla extract)

  • 2-3 Tbsp powdered sugar (or to desired sweetness - we like to keep the sugar to a minimum around our house)

Directions:

Place a metal mixing bowl in the fridge for 20-30 minutes. Scoop coconut cream out of the can into the cold metal bowl (save the liquid in a container for smoothies later on). Using a whisk attachment start whipping the cream. Add in vanilla and slowly add in powdered sugar. Keep whipping until fluffy and well mixed. Scoop into a plastic sandwich bag and snip off the lower corner of one side or use cake decorating bag to squirt coconut whipped cream into your beverage. Also great on top of fruit and gluten free pancakes as a healthy fat source.

Note: Coconut cream has healthy fats to nourish hormonal health and brain health, especially in your children! It also is antimicrobial, antibacterial and anti-fungal.
